PEC supports Pontotoc Technology Center’s Lineworker Academy
With the help of People's Electric Cooperative (PEC), Pontotoc Technology Center (PTC) began their Lineworker Academy in the Fall of 2023. The program is set to equip aspiring professionals with the skills and knowledge required for a successful career in the demanding field of electrical line work. The program is led by Jamie Perry who brings over 3 decades of expertise to the program including six years at PEC where he served as a Senior Line Technician and Director of Technical Services.
As the demand for reliable power continues to grow, the need for skilled lineworkers becomes increasingly crucial. With the introduction of this comprehensive program, PTC aims to address this industry demand by producing a new generation of highly trained and safety-conscious lineworkers. The program will provide students with an in-depth understanding of electrical power systems, fiber optic repair, and installation, practical skills for working at heights, and the ability to maintain and repair power and fiber lines with precision and efficiency. The program will also provide the educational hours necessary for students to obtain their Class A Commercial Drivers License.
“Recruitment for the program became much easier when we were able to offer our students opportunities like internships with companies of the stature of PEC and other respected companies in this industry. Through simulated real-world scenarios and state-of-the-art training facilities, students will develop the skills and confidence required to excel in their future careers.
“We are thankful that PTC included us in the initial planning phase of this program. They allowed PEC to be part of the discussions regarding workforce issues in the skilled trades sector,” Executive Vice-President and CEO Kevin Wood said. “This program fulfills a need in our area that has been apparent for quite some time.”
The Lineworker Program is open to adults (age 18+) who want to kick off a career in the lineworker industry. The program is a full-time program beginning in August and ending in June.
