What PEC Members Need to Know
As scams continue to rise, it’s more important than ever for you to stay informed and vigilant. Scammers are targeting electric cooperative members, often posing as representatives of People's Electric Cooperative (PEC) to gain your trust to access your personal information or receive payments under false pretenses. Here are some common scams currently circulating and how you can protect yourself.
1. Door-to-Door Solar Sales Scams
Some members have reported visits from door-to-door salesmen claiming to represent PEC, attempting to sell solar panel installations. These individuals may claim PEC is endorsing or has partnered with their company for solar installations, which is not true. PEC has no affiliation with any third-party solar sales companies. If a salesperson says otherwise, be cautious and do not feel pressured to engage with them. Instead, contact PEC directly to verify any claims related to solar services.
2. Your Meter has Been Changed from Analog to Digital Recently
Members have also reported calls from sales representatives who begin the phone call by confirming your home address and whether a digital meter has been recently installed at your location. The individuals wish to set up a time to speak with you at your residence about installing solar panels. While it’s possible you have received a digital meter recently as part of PEC’s ongoing metering upgrades, PEC is not sending salespeople door-to-door to obtain information from our members. If in question, contact PEC directly to verify any claims.
3. Phone Payment Scams
Scammers are also targeting PEC members by phone, demanding immediate payment under the threat of disconnecting electricity. These fraudsters often use high-pressure tactics, urging members to pay through non-traditional methods like prepaid cards, wire transfers, or payment apps. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and contact PEC’s Member Services Department at (580) 332-3031 to verify your account status.
If you suspect a scam or encounter suspicious activity, report it immediately to PEC. Working together, we can help protect each other from fraudulent schemes targeting our community. Stay alert, stay informed, and don’t hesitate to reach out to PEC with any concerns.
