For most PEC members, outages are rare and typically last only a few hours. But when major storms—like the devastating tornado that impacted the Sulphur area in April 2024—move through our region, extended outages can occur and require a more coordinated restoration effort.
So when the power goes out, how do PEC crews know where to start? And how do you know if your outage has been reported? It all comes down to a safe, efficient restoration plan.
When it’s safe for crews to begin work, they start by repairing power lines and equipment that will restore service to the greatest number of members in the shortest amount of time. 360302403
This process typically begins with main distribution lines that serve large areas. From there, crews move to tap lines that deliver power to transformers, and finally to individual service lines that connect directly to homes and businesses.
While we can’t control the weather, we can prepare for it. PEC maintains an inventory of poles, transformers, and other essential equipment so crews can respond quickly. During widespread outages, multiple crews work simultaneously across the system, and when needed, we coordinate with neighboring cooperatives to bring in additional support.
A proactive approach also helps reduce the risk of outages. That’s why you may see PEC crews and vegetation management contractors trimming trees and clearing rights-of-way. While we value our trees, even one overgrown limb can cause an outage. Regular maintenance and system inspections help improve reliability for everyone.

Members who rely on electric-powered medical equipment should always have a backup plan, such as a generator, extra supplies, or an alternate location. If using a generator, be sure to follow all safety guidelines.
