As storm season approaches, People's Electric Cooperative (PEC) encourages all members to take a few simple but essential steps to prepare their homes and families for severe weather and potential outages. Being proactive before storms hit can prevent stress, reduce damage, and keep you and your loved ones safe. Here’s what to do:
Before:
- Assemble an emergency kit with flashlights, extra batteries, non-perishable food, bottled water, medications, blankets, and a basic first-aid kit.
- Charge all devices like phones, power banks, and laptops so you’re not left in the dark—literally.
- Check your generator to ensure it works properly and has fresh fuel.
- High winds can send branches and objects flying—secure your yard and report tree limbs near power lines to PEC for safe removal.
- Know how to report outages -- sign up for alerts, download SmartHub, or save our number.
- Test or install surge protection to shield electronics from power surges during lightning or grid disruptions.
During:
- Stay indoors and away from windows to avoid injuries from flying debris or shattered glass.
- Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce the risk of fire.
- Unplug electronics to protect them from potential voltage spikes—even with surge protectors in place.
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to preserve food for longer.
- Monitor local weather alerts using a battery-powered or hand-crank radio in case of power loss. 510707506
After:
- Look out for downed power lines. Stay far away and call PEC immediately if you see 1.
- Use generators safely—never indoors or in enclosed areas like garages, as this poses a carbon monoxide risk.
- Inspect your home for damage, especially the roof, electrical wiring, and any signs of flooding or leaks.
- Discard spoiled food. If power is out for more than 4 hours, check food safety guidelines from the CDC.
- Be patient with power restoration. PEC crews work quickly and safely to restore power, prioritizing areas with the most critical need.
