Before Santa makes his list and checks it twice, People's Electric Cooperative (PEC) wants to help you check off your own winter preparedness list! Winter storms can bring harsh weather, including heavy snow and ice that may lead to downed power lines and outages. Taking a few simple steps now can help keep your home warm, your family safe, and your holidays merry—no matter what winter brings.
- Build an Emergency Kit: Stock up on non-perishable foods, water, flashlights, extra batteries, a first aid kit, essential medications, warm clothing, and blankets. 241600602
- Prepare Your Home: Insulate doors and windows to keep out the cold. Trim any tree branches that might pose a risk to your home during a storm, and if you have a generator, make sure it’s installed safely.
- Protect Pipes from Freezing: Wrap pipes in unheated areas to prevent freezing. Let faucets drip slightly in extreme temperatures to keep water flowing.
- Charge Devices and Stay Connected: Charge essential devices and portable power banks in advance of a storm. Follow us on our Facebook page to receive outage and restoration updates.
- Use Heating Sources Safely: If using space heaters, place them on a flat, stable surface and never leave them unattended. Fireplaces should be cleaned and inspected yearly, and generators must be used outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide risks.
- Plan for Power Outages: Keep extra blankets and layers available, and limit opening your fridge to keep food from spoiling. Generators should be run outdoors, at least 20 feet from your home.
- Stay Informed: Follow local weather updates, and sign up for our outage texting program to report your outage and receive alerts. To opt-in, text “peoplesout” to 85700.
- Have a Family and Pet Plan: Plan ahead for any special needs, including the elderly or those with medical needs, and ensure pets have a safe, warm spot indoors. 333500600
