Small Changes. Big Winter Savings.
In Oklahoma, weather-driven energy use is simply part of everyday life. It’s one of the tradeoffs of modern comfort. Unlike earlier generations who relied on wood stoves to get through the winter, today we enjoy steady indoor temperatures, comfortable enough to watch an OKC Thunder game in a T-shirt, even when it’s freezing outside.
That comfort, however, comes at a cost.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, heating and cooling account for roughly 24% of the average household’s energy use. When nearly a quarter of your home’s energy budget goes toward one system, it makes sense to operate it as efficiently as possible.
Oklahoma experiences both extremes, scorching summers and frigid winters. And when it comes to heating and cooling costs, one simple rule applies: the greater the difference between your thermostat setting and the outdoor temperature, the harder your HVAC system has to work. 851339802
Energy experts estimate that you can reduce home heating costs by about 2% for every degree you lower your thermostat. For example, if your winter setting is typically 73°F, lowering it to 68°F could save you around 10% on heating costs. Lowering the temperature a few more degrees at bedtime can lead to even greater savings.
At PEC, we’re always happy to help members find practical ways to use energy more efficiently. And remember, saving energy doesn’t always require major changes or upgrades. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of a few degrees.
As winter settles in this February, a small thermostat adjustment can help keep your home cozy while putting a little extra warmth back into your budget.
